The Bakhtiari carpet originates from the Iranian cities called Chahar, Mahaal, and Bakhtiari. This carpet type gets its name from the Bakthiari tribe who lived in a city with the same name. Bakhtiari carpets have been popular all around the world since the 19th century, and it is more expensive now than ever. What makes this type of carpets so special is that while the cotton foundation of the carpet is the same for all Bakhtiari carpets, its wool weft is often taken from the herds of the tribe that produces it. Therefore, Bakhtiari carpets, while sharing the same foundation, have many different variations. The color of the wool makes a great difference as well as the choice of colors can also vary depending on the tribe. It appears that most tribes have used shades of white, red, brown ,green, and yellow.
