Hereke carpets are a form of carpets made in a coastal town named Hereke which is now a part of Kocaeli (a city in Turkey). The first handmade Hereke carpet was made in this town and for a long time it was only produced there. As time went on, Hereke carpets got more recognition and as it took years for one handmade Hereke carpet to be completed, a factory named Hereke Fabrika-i Humayunu was founded. After that, Hereke rugs gained more attraction across the world, even being used in palaces and as political gifts, it is now one of the most popular carpet types. It is mostly made using silk and a combination of cotton and wool. There are times where a Hereke carpet is made with gold or silver threads as well. The colours used in a Hereke carpet range from soft and pastel like colours to dark and gloomy colours.
